Wat Phra Si Sanphet

Two museums, Chao Sam Phraya National Museum (Wed–Sun 9am–4pm) and Chantharakasem National Museum (Wed–Sun 9am–4pm) contain exhibits of Thai Buddhist art and archaeology, with an emphasis on the Ayutthaya period. The newer Ayutthaya Historical Study Centre (Tue–Sun 9am–4:30pm) offers further insight into Ayutthaya’s history with professionally curated displays focusing solely on the city.

Many visitors to Ayutthaya also visit Bang Pa-In (daily 8:30am–5pm), a summer palace complex built by Rama IV and his son Rama V, 20km (12 miles) to the south. The most photographed feature of the complex is a pretty little Thai pavilion in a small lake by the entrance. Also of note are the Chinese-roofed Wehat Chamrun Palace and Withun Thatsana tower, which offers a fine view over the lakes and gardens, including a topiary with bushes trimmed to resemble a small herd of elephants.

Across the river and south from the palace grounds, Wat Niwet Thamaprawat is a Buddhist temple built by Rama V in 1878 in the style of a Christian church, complete with stained-glass windows and Gothic spires.
